These units were manufactured in the United States by Wolf Appliance Inc., of Madison, Wisconsin, and sold nationwide at home builders and appliance stores during January 1998 through June 2008 and priced between $5,000 and $9,000.
The 48-inch Wolf gas ranges are stainless steel with a double oven. On the lower front of the larger oven door is a “Wolf” logo. The cooktop burners are safe to use and so is the large 30-inch oven which has a larger gas flow so the flame reaches all the burner tube ports.
The smaller of the two ovens — the 18-inch — experiences a delay in gas ignition. Wolf has received 97 reports of stoves with faulty ignition problems and 15 minor burns, but no reports of fires or property damage.
To prevent burns to consumers, Wolf is voluntarily recalling the above models. The model and serial numbers are located on a metal plate on the inside left wall of the range top and are accessible when the range top is cool. Using the S-hook that came with the range, lift off the black pressed steel top to see the metal plate and numbers.
The fire hazard does not affect all of the 18-inch ovens, but in some, the flame may not reach all of the burner tube ports. Gas may build up inside the oven and ignite in a direct flash when the customer opens the oven door. This does not happen every time the oven is used, or with every 18-inch oven.
Even though the 18-inch oven may appear operational, customers are advised to immediately stop using it. Problems could arise without warning, or any noticeable change in performance. Customers should contact the manufacturer, Wolf Appliance to schedule a free, in-home repair.
For more information and scheduling, please contact Wolf Appliance toll-free at (866) 643-6408 between 8:30 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. CT, Monday through Friday. Consumers may also visit the business web site at www.wolfappliance.com.
Top priority is given to customers affected by the recall. The repair itself should take less than an hour. Do not attempt repairing the unit yourself, as the burner and igniter must be changed. Only authorized parts are used to ensure proper replacement parts and that they are installed properly.
