!!!A recall has been issued on Jenn-Air by Maytag Sevice downdraft gas cooktops. The recall was voluntary, and was announced by Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa and The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on November 17, 2004. The Jenn-Air by Maytag Service recall includes about 1,170 individual units of the Jenn-Air Downdraft Gas Cooktops manufactured by Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa between the dates of January 1, 2004 and September 17, 2004. The defective models were sold for about $2,000 each at appliance stores across the United States between January and September 2004.
!!!Prior to the date of the recall, Maytag Corp. received four separate reports of a gas leak during use of the Jenn-Air by Maytag Service that led to fire. There were no injuries reported from the fires, but the incidents led to a recall of the defective model. It was found that a particular model of the Jenn-Air by Maytag Service cooktops were a fire hazard due to faulty electrical arcing in the switches that was causing gas leaks. It was determined that Jenn-Air Downdraft Cooktop model number JGD8348CDP, with serial numbers xxxxxxEA through xxxxxxxER were the only ones that had the faulty electrical arcing. The two knobs on the left of the cook tops control panel are the only ones affected. The affected switches on recalled units were located too close to the gas tubing, which was causing interference with the safe and proper functionality of the tubing.
!!!If you think you may have one of the Jenn-Air Downdraft Gas Cooktops that are included in the recall, the model and serial number can be found on a label that is located in the cabinet under the cook top. If you find that your Jenn-Air Downdraft Gas Cooktop is among those included in the recall, please contact the manufacturer. Maytag, Corp. will schedule an in-home repair, free of charge. Until then, refrain from using the left-most control knobs. The controls in the center and on the right are completely safe to use.
